I’m a freelance film writer based near London, and I’d love to work with you. This interview is a good introduction to me.

I’ve been the Executive Editor of film site and publishing house Seventh Row since 2017, in which time I’ve co-edited and co-written 13 ebooks about film. That includes the first books ever written about Joanna Hogg and Céline Sciamma.

I’m a regular contributor to The Film Stage and I have bylines at Little White Lies, JumpCut Online, The Spool, Cinema Year Zero, and Girls on Tops. I’m also a regular panelist on the Seventh Row Podcast.

Career highlights include giving talks about feminist horror in London and Berlin, moderating a Q&A with Mike Leigh, and chatting for an hour on Skype with my idol Kelly Reichardt.

I’m a Rotten Tomatoes certified critic and a member of the Online Association of Female Film Critics (OAFFC).

I make movies in my spare time.

What people are saying about my work

One of the finest film-related texts of 2019 was the Seventh Row team’s analysis of Mike Leigh’s Peterloo, and this series of deep cinema exploration continues with Tour of Memories: The Creative Process Behind Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir and The 2019 Canadian Cinema Yearbook. Both ebooks are once again edited by two of the smartest, most readable writers on film art, Orla Smith and Alex Heeney.

Christopher Schobert, The Film Stage

The talented crew over at Seventh Row have done something fascinating by devoting an entire ebook to writing and interviews related to one of the best films of 2018, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here. It’s what we want more often from critical analysis — a conversation with the art and its creators — but so rarely get.

Portraits of Resistance covers enormous ground, reading Sciamma’s work as queer cinema, women’s cinema, European cinema, looking at the both the stories and the aesthetics, and how Sciamma has already created distinct and unique films with a singular voice. Not only is it a great introduction for any who want to learn more about the filmmaker, it will be a cornerstone for any future Sciamma scholarship.

Seventh Row is changing the game by regularly publishing ebooks on some of my favorites, like Joanna Hogg and Kelly Reichardt. I just read the newest book, Portraits of Resistance, on Céline Sciamma and am pleased to report that it lived up to my high expectations. Were it a print publication, I would be ecstatic to discover it in a bookstore.
